Installation FAQ

I downloaded the .air file but my computer doesn't know what to do with it

You need to download the Adobe AIR runtime from labs.adobe.com

I downloaded the .air file but my computer wants to open it in Firefox or some application other than the Adobe AIR Installer

Right click and select open with "Adobe AIR Installer"

The install worked, but when I open StomperScrutinizer I get a blank window.

The most likely cause of this scenario is that your firewall software is blocking the Adobe AIR runtime from accessing the internet. Allow AIR to access the internet and content should appear at launch.

Ack! I still can't install. Help?!?

A one-click installer is available for computers with the latest Flash player. Please update your flash player and revisit the download page.

Functionality FAQ

My page renders oddly, what browser is this?

Stomper Scrutinizer uses the WebKit rendering engine that powers Safari. Originally built for Macintosh computers by Apple, Safari is now available for windows as well. Sites that are written to current HTML standards should perform well with the Scrutinizer.

How literal is the size of the "foveal region" in the Scrutinizer simulation?

Exact distances of eye to screen and related factors vary significantly across ergonomics, hardware, software, body size, etc. We're striving to provide as accurate a simulation as possible.

If you've got feedback, send it our way! We've done our homework, but are always open to a lesson.

What's the story with color?

Our first versions of the simulation, as shown in the "Atom Bomb" lead video, showed a purely black and white peripheral region. Recent research has been able to demonstrate color advantages in visual search in the periphery, and while the presence of cone receptors is very low, this limited quantity of color-optimized neural wetware extends a notion of color way below it's normal density.

Scrutinizer Install

Hello...

When I attempt to install Scritinizer, I get a very disturbing message from Adobe Systems that goes like this:
"System Access: UNRESTRICTED
This application may access your file system and the internet, which may put your computer at risk. "

So not knowing exactly what is about to happen, I am reluctant to install this application.

I have already enquired about this once with no answer, so I will ask again. Please tell me what this means in terms of the scrutinizer application and what it is going to do with the unresticted access to my system.

Thank you.

Downloadable Applications Versus Web Browser

A key difference between web sites and downloadable, desktop applications is that desktop apps have access to read and write from the hard drive.

This is the primary "risk" that is referenced. Adobe's AIR platform is in Beta, and they have not implemented a set of user controls for specifying how powerful an application can be... presumably, they plan to.

So, there are two factors contributing to the wording of that message. 1) A real factor of trust. 2) Marketing positioning of some very new, sexy technology.

For the record, at the time of this message, Beta2, the Scrutinizer only records one empty text file to confirm that you have agreed to the Terms of Service. The browser within Scrutinizer stores temporarily source elements for web pages you browse.

Future versions of the Scrutinizer should not have such strong warnings during installation. This level of functionality - sandboxed file write, temporary file creation, and network access - would typically not be regarded as "unrestricted access".
